ABSTRACT:

A pre-experimental study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge regarding the expressed breast milk among postnatal working mothers in selected area in Junagadh district. The objectives of the study were (a) To assess the pre-test knowledge regarding expressed breast milk among postnatal working mothers. (b) To assess the effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme by comparing pre-test and post-test knowledge regarding the expressed breast milk among post-natal working mothers. (c) To find out the association between the postnatal working mothers with their selected demographic variables. The research approach selected for the study was quantitative research approach and pre-experimental research-one group pre-test post-test design. The study was conducted at selected area of Junagadh district. Total 40 samples were selected from Junagadh district based on non-probability purposive sampling. The researcher used structured interview schedule and structured questionnaire for data collection regarding demographic variables and pre-test. As a part of intervention structured teaching programme on expressed breast milk was carried out among postnatal working mothers. The post-test score was measured with the same questionnaires after seven days. The collected data were analysed by using inferential statistical method. t-test was used to evaluate the effectiveness ofSTP on the level of knowledge regarding expressed breast milk among postnatal working mothers. It revealed that the mean score of pre-testswas 10.65 and post-test was 16.58. The mean difference was 5.93. The obtained “t” value 21.12. Hence it was highly significant p<0.001 level. Hence their findings of the study revealed that the structured teaching programme was effective in improving knowledge regarding expressed breast milk among postnatal working mothers.

INTRODUCTION:

Breast feed is the most natural feed and breast milk is the best milk. The basic food of infant is mother’s milk. Since the breast milk is essential for the infant’s health, the mother has to continue the exclusive breast feeding1. But in cases of working women, they can feed their child only when they are getting leisure time.

One of the other methods through which the working women can manage their baby’s health is through expressed breast milk. Expression of breast milk is beneficial to both the baby as well as the mother; it provides nutrition to the child prevents breast complications.2

Most working women want to do the best for their children, they have lack of knowledge about the benefit of breast milk, and the method of expression and storage of breast milk. So, encouragement before and after delivery is important.3

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Mother working outside the home is one of the reasons for early weaning in 2018, 9% of women who got married and had a child of one year of age or younger returned to the work. Recent surveys show that the rate of working women increased up to 82%-86%. Lack of support and knowledge regarding management of breast feeding while employed, a non-supportive work environment, and problems of expressing breast milk are frequently given as reasons that working in easily.4

Most working women wants to do the best for their children, they lack information on the benefit of breast milk, and the method of expression and storage of breast milk. So, encouragement before and after delivery is very important.5

OBJECTIVES:

1.     To assess the pre-test knowledge regarding expressed breast milk among postnatal working mothers.

2.     To assess the effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme by comparing pre-test and post-test knowledge regarding the expressed breast milk among post natal working mothers.

3.     To find out the association between the postnatal working mothers with their selected demographic variables.

HYPOTHESES:

H1: There may be a significant difference in the level of knowledge in post-test score than pre-test score regarding expressed breast milk.

H2: There will be significant association between the pre-test and post-test knowledge scores with their demographic variables.

METHODOLOGY:

Research approach:

Quantitative research approach.

Research Design:

Pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design.

Research Setting:

The study will be conducted in selected area of Junagadh district.

POPULATION:

Target population: All the post-natal working mothers in selected area of Junagadh district.

Accessible population: Post-natal working mothers who are available in selected area of Junagadh district.

SAMPLE SIZE:

The sample size will be 40.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:

The research study was conducted by non-probability purposive sampling technique.

DATA ANALYSIS PLAN:

The collected data was analysed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics

RESULTS:

MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY:

A. Findings relatedto demographic variables:

1.     Majority 17 (42.5%) of the respondents were 27-32 years old.

2.     Majority 18 (45%) of the respondents were Hindu religion.

3.     Majority 18 (45%) of the respondents had one child.

4.     Majority 13 (32.5%) of the respondents had upto 12th standard education.

5.     Majority 14 (35%) of the respondents were farmers.

6.     Majority 14 (35%) of the respondents had done farming work.

7.     Majority 13 (32.5%) of the respondents had monthly income 3000-5000 per month.

With regard to association between the level of knowledge with their selected demographic variables monthly income had significant association found. The study show that tabulated chi square value is more than tabulated value at the level of 0.01 for this demographic variable.

With regard to knowledge score pre-test mean score was 10.65, with S.D of 2.6320, and the post-test mean score was 16.58 with S.D. 2.8538, with a mean difference of 5.93 and the calculated ‘t’ value was t=21.12 which was greater than the table value. Hence, there was a high statistical significance at p<0.001 in STP for knowledge score.

CONCLUSION:

The main conclusion from this present study is that most of the postnatal working mothers who attend structured teaching programme onexpressed breast milk got benefited and itimproved the knowledgeof postnatal working mothers.
